10-31-2016 09:45 AM. It could be in back-button focus mode. Instead of a shutter half-press, you hit a button on the back of the camera. Try resetting the camera. Hi--I have a Canon 5D I bought used in very good condition from a friend and my lens will only autofocus while the camera body is in full auto mode. Frustrated!!
07-26-2021 11:20 PM. I have an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. The Auto Focus does not work. When I turn the camera on the letters MF flashes in the window on the back. The lens is set to AutoFocus and when I change it to ONE SHOOT or AL SERVO it flashes a message that says "Set the focus mode switch on the lens to AF" which it is already there. For this reason, if the lens is not securely mounted, there may be cases where the autofocus does not operate correctly. Please mount the lens securely, as shown in the image below. 1) The autofocus works (As in the lens starts working) fine when in Liveview or in Video mode. 2) The lens is 100% set to AF and not MF. 3) When in live view and video mode both the half pressed shutter and the AF-ON button both work. Just NOT in normal mode (looking through the viewfinder and half pressing the shutter)

If the subject's face is significantly out of focus, face detection will not be possible. If the lens enables manual focusing even while the lens's focus mode switch is set to , turn the focusing ring to attain rough focus. The face will then be detected and < > will be displayed.
